Our Vision:

CRITERIA FOR REDEVELOPMENT:

The Vision for Richmond Dock has been based on a holistic approach that will benefit the residents of Appledore and secure the long term future of the site. It is essential that the Vision is economically sustainable and that the site is used in a way that will generate an income to help with any future maintenance and repairs of the Dock.

C.A.S.H. has sought the opinions of the community and would also like to work in partnership with the relevant bodies such as English Heritage and Torridge District Council.

The site can be a beacon for eco-friendly design and planning, with full disabled facilities. It should enhance the surrounding Conservation Area.

Of prime importance is the restoration of the Dry Dock to full working order and to have a development that will reflect the proud maritime heritage of Appledore.

THE GRADE 2* LISTED DRY DOCK:

  • Hull maintenance & repair of vintage vessels
  • Viewing platform for public access
  • Dock split into two with one end covered, possibly for a long term project (such as building new Gig boats)
  • Space around the dock for a crane and repair related activities
  • Encourage different vessels to enter the dock to maintain the interest of returning visitors
  • Re- rigging of historic sailing vessels

SLIPWAYS AND THE PARLOUR:

  • Slipways to be reinstated with a sling crane for bringing small vessels ashore for repair
  • Floating pontoons where vessels awaiting repair can be moored- possible Ferry berth
  • Possible floating heritage and interpretation centre

AREA SURROUNDING THE DOCK:

  • Low level structures protecting the view into and out of the Conservation Area
  • Boat Building sheds demonstrating traditional skills (eg rope splicing) - a living museum
  • Space for the Gig Club
  • Marine related businesses such as chandlery, marine electronics, net repair, etc
  • Hire of small boats, kayaks, fishing trips
  • Fish wholesale outlet with internet presence
  • Living museum features working closely with North Devon Maritime Museum
  • Dive centre linked with Lundy
  • Artist studios, workshops, galleries, etc
  • Organic Café

EDUCATION:

  • Training courses run in association with North Devon College, study/conference centre
  • Library dedicated to maritime literature/study
  • Dedicated website to Richmond Dock site and the history of ship building in the Torridge

FUNDING:

  • It is essential that the site is partly self funding
  • A working dock and other income generating schemes will help achieve this
  • CASH are currently compiling a business plan to explore European and other funding avenues
  • Torridge District Council asked to assist with "Primer Funding"

The Vision can only be achieved if there is NO RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT of the Richmond Dock site

We are facing a once in a lifetime opportunity to safeguard and guarantee the future of one of the most important maritime sites in the whole of South West England.
